The Lluna Camps for Girls and Boys: Holiday Camps and Mentorship
The Lluna Camps for Girls and Boys is an initiative designed to empower children aged 13 to 24 with the critical soft skills needed to navigate adulthood, education, and the professional world. We believe that by nurturing leadership and managerial qualities from an early age, young individuals can develop the confidence and capabilities required to thrive in a competitive global environment. The camps will provide a dynamic platform for young people to connect with successful professionals worldwide, who will volunteer their time to mentor and support the students in their personal growth journey.
The Lluna Camp was run by the Shima Foundation for 4 years and was interrupted by COVID-19. We are now coming back better, aiming to provide support to children during the holiday period when working parents struggle to address the needs of their children.
Target Group:
The Lluna Camps will cater to children aged 10 to 24, specifically students from the last year of primary school to Year 4 of University or College. This age range allows for the development of life skills that will serve as a foundation for further education and professional pursuits.
The primary goal of the programme is to equip students and young with the essential soft skills necessary for success in school, future careers, and personal growth. These skills include:
- Leadership development
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
- Study and time management techniques
- Self-confidence and self-awareness
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Transitioning to further education and work
Programme Structure:
The Lluna Camps will be organized as a series of interactive workshops, mentorship sessions, and practical activities aimed at building the soft skills of participants, depending on their gender and age. The programme will be structured to ensure that students not only learn these skills but also have opportunities to apply them in real-life scenarios. Key components of the programme include:
- Workshops and Seminars:
Focused on key life skills, these sessions will address areas such as communication, leadership, and career development. Industry professionals will share their experiences and insights to provide students with a better understanding of the professional world. - Mentorship Program:
Successful professionals from various industries will volunteer to mentor students, offering guidance and sharing their personal career journeys. This mentorship will provide students with direct access to experienced role models and will encourage them to set and pursue their own life goals. - Practical Activities and Challenges:
To reinforce the lessons learned, students will engage in team-building exercises, case studies, and problem-solving challenges. These hands-on activities will help participants practice leadership, collaboration, and decision-making in a controlled environment. - Personal Growth and Confidence Building:
Through self-reflection exercises, group discussions, and coaching, students will develop greater self-confidence and a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement. - Parental Engagement
Through structured engagement with parents, Lluna Camps will structure its programmes to ensure parental feedback is integrated into the design.
Partnerships
The Lluna Camps will work in collaboration with schools. Corporates, government bodies and surrounding communities across Kenya. By establishing partnerships with local educational institutions, the programme aims to reach a wide demographic, potentially impacting tens of thousands of students across various regions. The programme will foster a sense of community and connection, allowing students to share experiences and learn from each other’s backgrounds and perspectives.
Impact and Vision
The ultimate goal of the Lluna Camps for Girls and Boys is to shift the life goals of young people, helping them to set ambitious yet achievable objectives for their futures. Through the development of essential life skills, students will become more confident, capable, and prepared for the challenges of adulthood. The programme seeks to create a lasting impact, not only on the individuals who participate but also on the communities they come from, ultimately enabling the growth of confident, well-rounded young people who are ready to lead across boundaries and in diverse environments.
