The Shima Foundation
The Shima Leadership Academies Foundation (the Shima Foundation) creates opportunities for young girls and boys from marginalised backgrounds to access quality education and training opportunities that would usually not be readily available to them.
Our work addresses significant inequalities in society that limit the potential of a growing majority of young people, particularly women, to access the tools and training they need to achieve their highest potential.
Through formal and informal education, we utilize experiential methods to ensure that young women and men get the best shot at achieving their potential while enabling them to address challenges facing society including unemployment, sexual and gender-based violence, poor access to quality education, environmental degradation as well as stigma faced by people with mental health disabilities in society. Our key initiatives are the Lluna Holiday Camps that bring young people together to build character, gain life-skills and set self-development targets. We are also in the process of developing the Lluna Academy for Girls, enabling children from vulnerable backgrounds to access quality education.

Uthabiti Africa Advisory Services Ltd is the African childcare market facilitator which seeks to accelerate quality, affordable childcare services across Africa. We see the childcare crisis as the market opportunity that allows us to launch into the market while contributing to Africa’s long-term human development agenda.
Uthabiti Africa emerged as a broad-based response to inequalities in society, particularly in relation to international development narratives in and on Africa. Power has often been wielded over and against African-led initiatives, creating a situation where locally-led solutions are sidelined. Co-created initiatives that shift power to local people and local institutions are only now beginning to resonate with funders and other stakeholders.Transformative change at scale requires the creation of strategic partnerships across boundaries aimed at catalyzing change within a short period than would be traditional organic growth.
Uthabiti Africa’s anchor initiative is the Collaborative Action for Childcare – a multi-stakeholder initiative to accelerate affordable, quality early childhood care and education across Africa is Uthabiti’s initial response to create change through systemic collaborative action. The Collaborative Action for Childcare in Kenya has the following 3 elements: (a) Policy and regulatory reform to remove barriers affecting the growth of the early childhood care ecosystem, particularly women-led childcare enterprises (b) Blended financing to accelerate the growth of 15000 women-led early childhood care and education enterprises (c) initiatives to radically transform the early childhood workforce, enabling at least 30,000 childcare workers to have dignified and stable jobs.
Under the partnership, Uthabiti will support the generation of ideas for long-term economic development of communities.
